AMARILLO – “The Caregiver in the Room: Considerations for Providers Working with Families” will be this month’s topic of the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Texas Military Program webinar on April 26.
The one-hour webinar will begin at 10 a.m. and is free and open to anyone interested, but registration is required, said Andrew Crocker, AgriLife Extension program specialist in gerontology and health, Amarillo.
This training session will examine interpersonal communication skills and strategies for providers collaborating with family caregivers, said Rachel Brauner, program coordinator with agency’s Texas Military Program in College Station.
Dr. Leanne Knobloch, professor and director of graduate study within the department of communication at the University of Illinois, will lead the webinar. She specializes in interpersonal and health communication.
Knobloch will examine the core challenge of how to respect the autonomy of the client while also communicating with his or her family caregiver. Specific topics include protecting one’s desired public image, offering support and providing comfort. Guidelines for best practices will be discussed.
“The presenter will go over protecting face by explaining that ‘face’ is our desired public image, and ‘facework’ is the behavior we use to uphold a desired public image in interaction, while ‘face threats’ occur when someone contests, rejects or criticizes our desired public image,” Brauer said. “As a service provider, it is important to understand a caregiver’s public image perception to identify what he/she may be going through and how you can show support and offer comfort to their situation.”
This and other webinars are offered through AgriLife Extension’s Military Program to provide professional development and interactive resources for those who may not be able to leave their homes for training, Crocker said.
The Military Families Learning Network Military Caregiving concentration will apply for continuing education credit from the University of Texas School of Social Work for credentialed and licensed professionals. Certificates of completion will also be available for participants interested in receiving training hours.
