Animal Science Research Feedyard

  • Feedyard: Provides 30 (10-15 head) pens for housing beef cattle.
  • Animal working facility: The working facility consists of an enclosed barn with a large crowd tub and snake that funnels cattle into a hydraulic squeeze chute. Cattle can be sorted into one of six sorting pens.
  • Pinpointer pens: Six pens capable of housing up to 15 growing cattle per pen. The data for each of the pinpointer feeders is accumulated on a central computer located in the wet chemistry laboratory of the metabolism barn.
  • Group pens: Six pens designed to feed growing cattle in groups of 12 to 15.
  • Environmental pens: These 18 pens are designed to collect nutrient run-off from each pen. Twelve of these pens have a hard surface base and six pens contain a clay base.
  • Hospital pens: Four pens designed for cattle convalescence and specialized care.
  • Shipping/recieving pens: These three pens are designed for shipping and receiving purposes.
  • Calan gate barn: This barn is equipped with 12 calan gates for individually feeding cattle. There are also 4 small ruminant pens for housing 10-15 animals each.
