Dr. MacDonald is the project director of the beef cattle research program and is involved in research relatd to improved feeding efficiency, forage utilization, nutrient management and animal health here at the TAES center.
Before coming to Amarillo, Jim was at the University of Nebraska, training in various aspects of ruminant nutrition, including laboratory analysis, data collection involving liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and spectrophotometry, as well as feedlot nutrition and management, animal systems analysis, and beef cow-calf management.
Jim has done research involving E. coli prevalence in feedlots, forage supplementation, effects of distillers grains and sorting stratagies. He is a member of the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists and is a trained rumen cannulaton surgeon.
