Extension Services, Diagnostics, and Applied Research Against Plant Disease Threats
Plant pathology extension programs at Amarillo revolve around delivering plant disease control and management solutions that are based on applied research. Our work focuses primarily on grain and vegetable crops produced in the Texas High Plains, which continue to face challenges from old and new diseases. Management solutions developed by the plant pathology program at Amarillo are informed by field trials and experiments to characterize plant pathogens and the diseases they cause.
Our work to deliver plant disease management solutions includes:
- Applied Research
- Operation of the Texas High Plains Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory
- Training of agents
- Coordination with producers and producer groups
- Dissemination of plant disease fact sheets

The Texas High Plains Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory
Based at Amarillo, the Texas High Plains Plant Disease Diagnostic Laboratory offers disease diagnostics and plant and insect identification services for the Texas High Plains. The lab aims to determine causal agents of diseased plants in a timely and efficient manner. Its goal is to deliver management solutions that can be implemented as soon as possible.
